Women and land ownership is a major issue as it addresses the need for restoring rights of the land with those who toil on it. In largely agrarian economies such as India, agricultural land, whether owned individually or collectively, is a critical source of livelihood. Therefore, this initiative is about lending voice to the invisible women workers who spend most of their lives on the fields without getting recognition or appreciation for their efforts.
The WGWLO network has enabled/ supported an estimated 9000 women to secure their land rights so far. As per WGWLO secretariat’s MIS data for the past three years shows that a total of 1297 women secured a total of 720 acres of land which averages out to 0.60 acres per beneficiary.
'Legal Clinics', an initiative of Working Group for Women and Land Ownership (WGWLO) to institutionalize, extend expert guidance and support to women to claim their land rights since 2019. A lawyer or an advocate sensitive towards gender empowerment and land subject expert was needed at this point to cater to complex cases & led to start of 'Legal Clinics' at all the 15 Swabhoomi Kendras. till May 2021 43 legal clinics have been conducted over 410 complicated cases out of which 97 resolved successfully with the help of Lawyers & Advocates. 218 are in process and Rest of the cases did not move further, due to social, monetary issues or complicated legal proceedings, while few of them were less likely to be taken forward due to legal limitations.
